At Bath City Farm Matt Smail worked with numerous schools, helping them to improve their school grounds. Grow Yourself is now offering a range of support for schools in addition to its garden and landscape services:
Garden and Landscape services:
We offer garden maintenance and design, landscaping and conservation work at competitive prices (see our Services page). We have full PL insurance to £2m and all our staff our DBS checked. Any trainees on site are fully supervised by staff at all times.
Design of food growing and wildlife areas:
Looking to design a new food growing area? Perhaps you want to encourage more wildlife into the an existing area or construct a new polytunnel? Grow Yourself can design from scratch or suggest improvements to an existing area. Picture shows new outdoor classroom with raised beds and seating completed at Oldfield Park Junior School
Individual support for teachers:
Teachers don't always have the time or skills to ensure that children can achieve and experience quality food growing at their school. Following a (free) initial meeting, we can tailor our support to complement existing teacher skills. Support may include:
bespoke expert advice to ensure the right vegetables are grown at the right time to ensure harvesting during term time.
garden maintenance support during school holidays e.g. watering or weeding to guarantee successfull Autumn term harvesting.
Individually tailored sessions with children linking to the curriculum where appropriate.
Recent case study: Oldfield Park Junior School:
Grow Yourself has worked with OPJS on a number of projects to improve their outdoor space. Mainly funded through money raised by the PTA, Grow Yourself has transformed a piece of waste ground into a useful outdoor seating area for one class (see picture above). They have also created a log seating area around a fire pit, a new chicken coup and a pizza oven made from clay and sand dug from only a few miles away.Children from years 3-6 were involved in mixing the sand and clay with their feet - see below.

‘Matt and his team at Grow Yourself have done a truly amazing job installing some great facilities for our children ranging from our outdoor classroom through to our activity trail, not to mention our new chicken coup! We are so pleased to be supporting this fantastic community venture as it provides an opportunity to support as well as reinforce one of our key values of our school. Indeed, a sense of community is something that we hold dear and are proud of at OPJS.’
